Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'Fresh Chapter' for The Big Apple in First Speech
During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.
A Groundbreaking Mayor
The young figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.
Rejecting advice to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.
A Sweeping Blueprint
Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:
- Subsidized daycare
- Fare-free public buses
- A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
- A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing External Headwinds
The new mayor must contend with concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past social media posts.
Mamdani has sought to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.
